So You Want to Be a Film Director: What Nobody Tells You

Everybody wants to be a director. Nobody tells you what it actually means.

It is not about having a vision. It is about having a vision and convincing 200 people to help you achieve it. Every day. For months. While things go wrong constantly.

Directing is problem solving. The location falls through, you find another one. The actor gets sick, you shoot around them. It rains, you rewrite the scene to take place in the rain. The good directors are not the ones with the best taste. They are the ones who keep going when everything breaks.

The best advice I ever got: make something. Anything. A short, a commercial, a YouTube video. The gap between wanting to direct and directing is just hitting record. Most people never hit record.

Your first movie will be bad. Your second will be less bad. Your tenth might be good. The only way to skip from bad to good is to make the bad ones first.
